SACRAMENTS
SIGN’S OF GOD’S GRACE
The sacraments are outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace, given to us by Christ as ways of encountering God’s love and presence in our lives. Through the sacraments, we are strengthened in faith, nourished in our relationship with God, and connected more deeply to the life of the Church.
The Episcopal Church recognizes two primary sacraments given by Christ—Holy Baptism and Holy Eucharist—as well as five other sacramental rites that mark important moments of faith and life.
SACRAMENTS OF THE CHURCH
Holy Eucharist
The Holy Eucharist, also known as Holy Communion, is the central act of worship in the Episcopal Church. In the Eucharist, we gather together as the Body of Christ to hear God’s Word, offer our prayers and thanksgiving, and receive the sacrament of Christ’s presence through bread and wine. All baptized Christians, regardless of denomination, are welcome to receive Communion at our altar.
Holy Baptism
Holy Baptism is the sacrament by which we are welcomed into the family of God and made members of Christ’s Body, the Church. Through the waters of Baptism and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are marked as Christ’s own forever and begin a lifelong jouney of faith. Baptism is available for infants, children, and adults, and is celebrated as part of the worshipping community.
AFFIRMING OUR FAITH
Confirmation
Confirmation is a rite in which baptized Christians publicly affirm their faith and the promises made at Baptism. Through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop, those being confirmed seek the strengthening of the Holy Spirit and a deeper commitment to living as followers of Christ within the Church.
Reception
Reception is a rite for baptized Christians who have been confirmed in another Christian tradition and wish to be formally welcomed into the Episcopal Church. Through the laying on of hands by a bishop, those received affirm their continued journey of faith and their commitment to the Episcopal way of worship and service.
Reaffirmation
Reaffirmation provides an opportunity for those who have previously been confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church to renew their baptismal vows and reaffirm their commitment to Christ. This rite is often celebrated during times of spiritual renewal, personal transistion, or a renewed call to faith and service.
SACRED MOMENTS IN LIFE
Weddings
The sacrament of Holy Matrimony celebrates the covenant of love and faithfulness between two people in the presence of God and the Church. Through prayer and blessing, couples seek God’s guidance and grace as they begin their life together. Those interested in being married at the church are invited to speak with the rector about the preparation process.
Funerals
A Christian funeral is a service of worship that celebrates the life of a loved one while proclaiming our hope in God’s promise of resurrection through Jesus Christ. Through prayers, Scripture, and the sharing of memories, we commend the departed to God’s loving care and offer comfort and support to those who grieve.
